Lima, Peru

Day 1

After a short plane ride of 5 hours we arrived in Lima, Peru. We flew with Avianca and the plane was very nice and we were able to watch free movies along the way (I will definitely be flying with them again). We met up with our tour manager when we got off the plane and were driven to our hotel in Lima. After walking around town in the district of Miraflores, Suzy and I were shocked to find that we were not experiencing culture shock whatsoever. This place reminded us of San Jose, Costa Rica exactly, but nicer. We felt a little too comfortable here and began our normal shenanigans of drinking cervezas and laughing at everything we did. The first restaurant we went to was where we really got to practice our Spanish for the first time this trip. We were both pretty rusty, but after a couple of beers we were laughing the night away with the bartenders.

Day 2

We received a tour of Miraflores and San Isidiro with our group this morning, which are 2 districts within Lima. We had a local tour guide talk to us about the history of the city and she answered all of our random questions. We went to a historical church and saw thousand of human bones which were scattered all below the church in the basement. We could have easily taken some as souvenirs, but decided against it.

We couldn't take pictures inside the church

The night before we walked through a park near our hotel, John F. Kennedy Park, that had several hundred cats in it. We were used to seeing wild dogs on the streets, but never cats. We learned that since people started feeding a few at this park many years ago they just kept breeding and breeding. It had become a well known issue by Lima and the mayor decided to have veternarians team up and fix them all. So now every couple of weeks these veterinarians will check on the cats and make sure they have food and water and are all fixed.

Suzy and I thought about parasailing off the coast of Lima, but decided after seeing the price of $80 for 10 minutes that it would not be worth it. So instead we wondered around the coast and took a nap in el parque del amor.

A Typical dish in Lima- seafood, chicken, and rice
(Being a coastal town, Lima is known for its fresh seafood)

We took full advantage of 2x1 happy hours- Pisco Sour is the National Drink- Que Rico :)
(Pisco is alcohol derived from grapes)

Another typical dish of meat and potatoes
(there are 4,000 varieties of potatoes grown in Peru so needless to say they are in every dish)
